Adjunct Faculty, Art (Graphic Design)

Summary:
Adjunct faculty in the School of Design's Department of Art/Visual Communication Design will be responsible for teaching courses in Graphic Design. Course assignments may include teaching typography, visual communication design studio, branding, packaging, introductory digital media, and corporate communication design.

Education/Experience:
Masters degree in Graphic Design or related discipline. Experience teaching graphic design at the college level with at least three years professional experience in the field of graphic design. MFA preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Ability:
Expert with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)

Fluency in the Mac operating system

Expert in theories and tools of digital and print publications

Expert in typography and layout design

Proficient in introductory web design skills and basic html/css coding

Ability to teach visual communication design courses in support of other majors: Business Communications, Digital Marketing, Fashion Design, Film & Moving Image

Proven record of integrating technology in the classroom

Engagement in experiential learning activities with students

Proven ability to develop effective course materials including syllabi, lessons, demonstrations, lectures, and workshops for students or faculty

Ability to provide constructive feedback and timely assessment to students

Commitment to advising, mentoring and guiding students

Ability to work with students of diverse backgrounds

Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with students, peers, and professional contacts

Competency in Microsoft applications, including Word and Excel

Ability to work in Blackboard or a similar online learning management system

Ability to travel between campuses

Ability to work evenings

Physical Requirements:
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, keyboarding, and repetitive motions. Close visual acuity. Position may require sitting for long periods of time and the ability to speak clearly and effectively for an extended period of time.

Essential Functions:
Teach up to two courses per semester as assigned

Teaching responsibilities include time spent in the classroom, studio, or telecommunications courses and in immediate preparation for them; maintaining and improving competence in subjects being taught; preparing teaching materials; conferring with students on course materials; directing individual and group studies; reviewing written examinations and papers; evaluating presentations; and supervising independent study projects. Professional peer review is an essential feature of effective teaching.

Faculty responsibilities include writing syllabi, reading and responding to emails, grading course work, submitting mid-term and final grades, and alerting appropriate university personnel to student problems on a timely basis.

University service includes service on the Faculty Council, school and departmental committees.

Teaching assignments may require teaching day and/or evening classes as needed.

Cooperative extension includes identifying current needs, adapting professional practice and/or research into contemporary language, presenting information and education to various constituents, providing leadership in identifying and presenting cutting-edge technology in their discipline, developing interdisciplinary approaches to problem solving, and collaborating with faculty to stay current in the field.
