Assistant Professor, Department of Dance

Department Summary:
The Department of Dance at Bridgewater State University (BSU) is committed to cultivating excellence, innovation and leadership in dance as education, as a performing art form, cultural practice, scientific inquiry, and interdisciplinary application. The dance program is dedicated to fostering scholarly artists and educators in dance, and developing arts-literate citizens. Through diverse dance techniques and pedagogies, dance science, somatics, cultural dance forms, historical inquiry, dance composition, and dance production and performance, students gain comprehensive knowledge of dance forms and practices, critical thinking skills, and practical experience in a variety of dance applications.

The Dance Department offers a BA in Dance, an honors program, an interdisciplinary minor and an education program for teacher certification in dance. The dance program offers a wide variety of dance technique training and a solid theoretical foundation for performance and choreography. In addition, the program offers an emphasis on dance pedagogy in either the private or public sector.

The Dance Department is part of the cohesive BSU campus community that provides professional opportunities for faculty advancement in teaching and scholarship and a clear path to tenure. Funding for faculty scholarship is available through the Center for the Advancement of Research and Scholarship as well as the Office of Teaching and Learning. There is also a significant institutional commitment and resources for international engagement and student research. The Dance Department is committed to supporting diversity and inclusion among its faculty, staff and students, and to promoting social justice. This emphasis is central to the institutions mission and is reflected throughout the Universitys curricular and co-curricular activities.

Essential Duties:
The Department of Dance is seeking candidates for a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor of Dance with expertise in dance education and dance as global and cultural studies with emphasis in the African Diaspora. Additional expertise in Somatics or technology is a plus for the position. Applicants should demonstrate knowledge and skills in a variety of teaching modalities such as student-centered, reflective and inquiry/conceptually based approaches to teaching and learning in higher education. Applicants should also demonstrate a prominent record of research, scholarship and/or creative activities. Successful candidates will exhibit a professional record of working collegiately and collaboratively with fellow faculty and students, and show integrity, creativity and good judgement as educators.

Essential Duties
Teach one or more dance forms from the African Diaspora with additional expertise that supports our curriculum in tap, jazz or hip hop.
Develop and teach courses in dance as global and cultural studies.
Develop and teach interdisciplinary courses.
Mentor undergraduate research in dance and dance education.
Demonstrate continued development in scholarly and/or creative work in the professional community.
Demonstrate a commitment to working with non-traditional students will require evening and some weekend teaching. Additional responsibilities include student advising, curriculum/program development and assessment, and collaboration on school, college, and university-wide committees.
Participate in service to the broader campus community through committee work, community building, grant writing, and service learning.

Required Qualifications:
Terminal Degree: PhD, EdD, or MFA in Dance
Record of teaching with knowledge and skills in a variety of teaching modalities such as student centered, reflective and inquiry/conceptually based approaches to learning in higher education (minimum of 1 year).
Record of scholarly research in dance and related fields.

Applicants whose teaching and research agendas are informed by culturally inclusive and social justice approaches are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants should also have an ability to use technology effectively in teaching and learning, to work collaboratively, have a record of scholarly activity and evidence of a commitment to public higher education.

Preferred Qualifications:
PhD and a record of five years of teaching in dance in higher Education.
