Assistant Professor of Art+Design and Director of the Wisconsin Art Collection Start Date: August 2025 Hiring Statement: The Department of Visual, Interactive and Performing Arts at Carroll University seeks applicants for an assistant professor position in Art+Design (MFA, instructional faculty tenure track, scholarship not required), who possess sophisticated graphic design and photography skills and a demonstrated respect for traditional, analog media, and fine arts skills. The successful applicant will approach the art and design classroom broadly, as an environment that promotes inter-disciplinary thinking and innovation. The successful applicant will also possess the interest and skills to maintain and curate the Wisconsin Collection, the university's permanent collection of art. The new Assistant Teaching Professor of Art+Design and Director of the Wisconsin Art Collection will teach within multiple visual arts programs as an expert in fine art, design thinking, foundations, professional preparation, and multidisciplinary technology - specializing in graphic design, photography, and time-based media. This role will elevate the student learning experience, aid in the retention of innovative artists and designers, and develop a student-centric, cross-disciplinary environment within visual arts classrooms. Interest in developing unified, foundational experiences and overlapping curriculum across the Visual, Interactive and Performing Arts is important. Industry experience in the development of client-based partnerships and a robust internship program is desirable. The teaching load for instructional tenure-track faculty is eight courses annually (4/4), and the job breakdown is 80% teaching and 20% service. The successful candidate will present the skills and passion for excellent teaching in a liberal arts setting, which includes both majors and non-majors. Service load includes academic advising at the programmatic level, and the role of Director of the Wisconsin Art Collection at the University level (which includes curation and oversight of a potential new museum space to house the Collection in the future. Qualifications: MFA or equivalent degree A minimum of three years (full-time or equivalent load) of teaching both graphic design and photography at the college level are required (beyond teaching assistant) Evidence of successful teaching, service, and professional achievements (scholarship not required) Ability to teach both foundational Graphic Design and Fine Art/Commercial Photography, and in at least in two of the following advanced areas: web design, typography, digital imaging, design thinking, user interface design for multiple platforms, current and emerging digital platforms, and related disciplines that combine digital with analog learning experiences and visual storytelling Additional desirable areas of expertise could include videography, analog photography practices, motion graphics (2D, 3D), digital illustration, game design, 3D modeling, and user experience design Technical expertise with industry software is expected Demonstrated ability to provide valuable service to the department and greater institution, commensurate with position and experience, which will include curriculum/course development and programmatic assessment and oversight/curation of the Wisconsin Collection Responsibilities: Teach courses as assigned (foundational through advanced) in photography, graphic design, and related areas Collaborate on program and curriculum development in the Visual Arts, including curating client-based projects and partnerships and developing interdisciplinary courses that include students from various areas of study like business, STEAM, health care, K-12 education, etc. Engage in meaningful service at the departmental, college, and university level that supports strategic goals and priorities, commensurate to rank Perform additional duties that include academic advising, participation in student scholarship and award decisions, and additional departmental and university service Appointee may also contribute to the general education program at Carroll by teaching courses within Carroll's general education program Oversee stewardship of the Wisconsin Collection, including: Developing and managing a Wisconsin Collection inventory system Leading communication with campus constituents, WI Collection Advisory Board, and inquiring artists regarding artwork donations, the removal/hanging of artwork, inventory requests, etc. Calling meetings and creating agendas for Advisory Board annual meetings Caring for and maintaining artwork within the Wisconsin Collection across campus Curating a potential new Museum space on campus to house the Wisconsin Collection Rank and Salary: Instructional Tenure Track, 4/4 load. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications.The Program: The Art+Design Program is situated within the Department of Visual, Interactive and Performing Arts, in the College of Arts and Sciences. There are five full-time faculty within the Art+Design Program, which include areas of specialization in Fine Art, Art Education, and Graphic Design, and a separate major in Video Game Design.
