The Theatre Department at Whitworth University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in Theatre with teaching, production, research, and service responsibilities. The Whitworth University Theatre Department offers students the unique opportunity to explore theatre from a faith-based perspective through various experiences. The department facilitates the creativity and discipline of its students through classes in acting, directing, non-traditional performance, design, theory, history, and literature. Performance opportunities such as mainstage productions and an improv troupe give students experience in a variety of performance styles. Whitworth University Theatre encourages students to develop a vision for the role of theatre in both their communities and the world at large.

Core Responsibilities
The anticipated responsibilities of this position, contingent on qualifications and needs, will consist of a combination of teaching undergraduate courses, supervising student projects, supporting mainstage productions in the candidate's area of expertise, and participating in departmental leadership, recruitment, and community engagement. Courses will be drawn from the following areas:

  • Acting
  • Directing
  • Voice
  • Movement
  • Introduction to Theatre
  • Script analysis
  • Theatre History
  • Other areas of expertise such as musical theatre, multicultural theatre, playwriting, etc.

Minimum Qualifications | Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • MFA or PhD in Theatre or applicable field of study
  • Experience directing, performing, and/or teaching in theatre at the educational, professional, or community level
  • Ability to work effectively as a colleague with university administration, faculty, staff, students, and guest artists
  • A personal commitment to the Christian faith and to the integration of faith and learning
  • Commitment to providing an equitable, just, and inclusive learning environment for all students.
  • Demonstrated growth in cultural competence, awareness of societal and structural inequities and proven experience in effectively establishing relationships and positive communications with students and other constituents across multiple dimensions of diversity including, but not limited to, race, gender, varying abilities, nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity, class or religious perspectives
  • A commitment to the educational mission of Whitworth University as a comprehensive Christian liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church
  • Demonstrated effectiveness or potential in college-level teaching
  • Strong relational skills with students and colleagues
  • Skill in the use of classroom technology

Start Date
The position will start in the Fall of 2024!

Assistant Professor in Theatre
Term: 9 months
Hiring range: $57,010 to $63,718
Commensurate with years of credited service. 1.75% increase to the minimum salary is granted for each year of credited service at the rank of Assistant Professor.
Associate Professor in Theatre
Term: 9 months
Hiring range: $61,253 to $68,459
Commensurate with years of credited service. 1.75% increase to the minimum salary is granted for each year of credited service at the rank of Associate Professor.
