Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital Civics

About the Opportunity

JOB SUMMARY

Dr. Christopher Le Dantec is recruiting a Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Digital Civics Initiative at Northeastern University. The postdoctoral fellow will develop their own research as well as support on-going research projects that include the design, development, and evaluation of civic technologies with communities in the Boston region.

The postdoctoral fellow will contribute to advancing our understanding of how digital technologies can support different forms of civic action - from governance to activism - with a particular focus on working with under-represented communities. Current projects are focused on understanding the limits and breakdowns of civic data use in informal community organizations who are addressing issues of climate resilience, urban mobility, and public safety. The fellow will be supported in developing their own lines of research, including establishing new partnerships with community groups and/or government agencies in the area, as well as be invited to contribute to existing lines of research.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

Develop and maintain community partnerships in the Boston region. This includes working with existing partners on on-going projects and building new relationships with local government agencies and community and non-profit organizations. (30%)

All candidates will be expected to conduct basic fieldwork and participatory design engagements with partners and stakeholders. [Non-technical candidates] Conduct far-reaching fieldwork across multiple partner/stakeholder sites. [Technical candidates] Design and develop prototype and testbed systems that will be deployed to community partners and stakeholders. All candidates will be expected to support the evaluation and assessment of deployed systems. (30%)

Mentor graduate and undergraduate students associated with the Public Computing Lab. (15%)

Publish research progress and findings in top-tier academic venues; contribute to grant writing and funding proposals. (15%)

Help establish the Digital Civics Initiatives as a nexus of civic- and community-engaged computing and design research at Northeastern. (10%)

Required Qualifications:

- Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction, Information Science, Computer Science, Design, or related fields

- Strong record of published research in HCI, CSCW, DIS, or related venues

- Demonstrated ability in qualitative, mixed methods, and/or design research methods

- Experience with community-based participatory research

- Experience working with civic organizations or government entities

- Technical candidates should have demonstrated ability to deliver and deploy robust prototype and testbed systems

Preferred Qualifications:

- Grant writing experience

- Teaching or mentoring experience

- Strong project management skills
