Position Announcement

The Art & Design Department at Utah Valley University invites applications for a Professional Track Faculty Artist-in-Residence in Motion Design, 3D Animation to begin August 2026. We seek a dedicated artist/designer and a collaborative educator who will teach undergraduate courses in Motion Graphics and/or 3D animation catered to new entertainment, film, and games industries and will motivate students to create compelling work. The candidate is expected to demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence and participate actively in their field of expertise.

UVU, located in Orem, Utah, is a comprehensive state institution of higher education with over 46,000 students. Orem is on the western front of the Wasatch Mountains and offers access to numerous outdoor activities including snow sports, hiking, mountain biking, and hunting. Summary of Responsibilities


  • Teaching: Teaches and supervises undergraduate courses in Motion Graphics/3D Animation. Plans, prepares, and implements an approved course of study. Prepares instructional materials (demos, visual presentations, online materials) as necessary. Instructs, manages, and supervises individuals and groups in classrooms/labs or online courses by using methods such as lectures, demonstrations, discussions, and visual aids. Mentor students outside of class time. Maintains and submits accurate and current reports and records regarding student grading, attendance, and performance.
  • Establishes and maintains office hours and advises students during this time and at other times as needed. Assists advisors, department chairperson, faculty, and department staff in maintaining an effective program, including curriculum development.
  • Plans, prepares, and implements an approved course of study. Prepares instructional materials (demos, visual presentations, online materials) as necessary.
  • Improves professionally and maintains currency and relevance in the courses taught. Stays abreast of new development trends, techniques, and materials through participation in workshop seminars, professional work experience, and exchange programs with industry professionals to maintain state-of-the-art skills and knowledge.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

Graduation from a regionally accredited institution with an appropriate degree in a related field to the coursework being taught. BFA degree or equivalent in Motion Design, 3D Animation, or related field of study. Knowledge and Skill in current instructional theories, strategies, techniques, and discipline content.

Preferred Qualifications:
Professional Motion Design, 3D animation, or related industry experience. College-level Motion Design, 3D animation, or related teaching experience. MFA degree in a related discipline.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Knowledge
  • Knowledge of the Motion Graphics-3D Animation workflow, practice, and theory
  • Knowledge of student management, motivation, and evaluation techniques
  • Knowledge of Apple and PC computer hardware
  • Experience with a variety of teaching methods and/or curricular perspectives
  • Knowledge of current industry practices, including aspects of AI
Skills
  • Skills and experience with current 3D Software (Blender, or equivalent), and the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Skills in Motion Graphics and/or Animation
  • Skills in 3D Sculpting (ZBrush), 3D Modeling, Substance Painter, and/or Digital Painting are a plus.
  • Skills in interpersonal relationships, problem-solving, and decision-making
  • Excellent communication skills
Abilities
  • Practice and teach the Motion Graphics-3D Animation workflow
  • Ability to teach, mentor, and motivate students in inclusive and engaging ways.
  • Ability to relate well with students and colleagues
  • Ability to evaluate student work effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to apply appropriate technology in classroom teaching
  • Ability to teach courses in a variety of formats: face-to-face/hybrid/online/weekends/evenings
