The Department of Visual Arts in the College of the Arts at California State University, Fullerton is seeking a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor of Art Education beginning in the Fall 2019. The Department
The Department of Visual Arts serves approximately 1,600 undergraduate art majors and 60 graduate students, with 34 full-time faculty and 70+ lecturer faculty. The department offers a BA in Art and BFA in Art with 13 areas of concentration, in addition to an MA and MFA in Art with 9 areas of concentration. CSUF is located about 30 miles from downtown Los Angeles in metropolitan Orange County and offers a full range of fine arts and professional programs including a nationally recognized art gallery located in the Visual Arts complex and the Grand Central Art Center, a 45,000 sq. ft. graduate studio/residence/exhibition facility located 15 minutes from campus. Position
The primary professional responsibilities of this instructional faculty member are to teach all level of courses in the theories and practices of art education to students in the Bachelor of Arts Education program and others interested in the field. This position requires expanding and developing new course materials; demonstrated familiarity with research methodologies in art education pedagogy; demonstrated familiarity with and application of new technologies in teaching art education; demonstrated aptitude to address the needs of a student population of great diversity in cultural background, age, ethnicity, and academic preparation. This position requires thorough knowledge of single-subject credentialing requirements for elementary and secondary art teachers and the newCalifornia Visual and Performing Arts Framework and Content Standards. Successful candidates will have command of image making and visual exploration using traditional and electronic media as well as a demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues in a multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary environment. Additionally, this position includes on-site supervision of single subject credential candidates in visual art and will travel to school sites where student teachers have been placed; attending Performance Assessment for California Teachers overview sessions; observing and submitting observation reports for student teachers/interns; guiding student teachers regarding the timing of theirTeacher Performance Assessment Exams; mediating and facilitating communication between student teachers and mentor teachers; attending supervisor/mentor teacher trainings or professional development workshops offered through the Single Subject Credential Program. Duties for this positions also include: engaging in active peer-reviewed creative/scholarly activities; participation in department, college, university, and system-wide service; maintaining office hours; and working collaboratively and productively with colleagues. Positive tenure and promotion decisions require excellent teaching; a record of creative/scholarly activity in the discipline; strong leadership contributions to Department and University committees and to external professional organizations that serve the broader disciplinary community.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MFA or PHD degree from an accredited institution with an emphasis in Art Education or related fields. ABD's may apply but must show evidence that the degree will be completed by the time of appointment.

  • Teaching experience in K-12 public schools, preferably at the middle and/or high school levels.

  • College level teaching experience in both studio technique/ practice and art education theory courses.

  • Familiarity with state standards and a strong working knowledge of theCalifornia Visual and Performing Arts Framework and Content Standardsthat govern teacher education program approval and teacher licensure, including experience with practicum and clinical teaching supervision.

  • Evidence of a strong commitment to teaching and a record of developing and advancing the curriculum within the Arts Education Area.

  • Evidence of an understanding of contemporary theoretical and historical pedagogical concepts in Art Education, and the ability to encourage critical thinking and problem solving. This includes evidence of an advanced understanding of image making and visual exploration using traditional and electronic media.

  • Evidence of communication skills with proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

  • Familiarity with state standards and a strong working knowledge of theCalifornia Visual and Performing Arts Framework and Content Standardsthat govern teacher education program approval and teacher licensure, including experience with practicum and clinical teaching supervision.

  • A demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a wide and culturally diverse range of students, faculty, and staff.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a practicing artist and researcher with an established reputation and a significant record of creative and/or scholarly achievement.

  • Record of published peer-reviewed research/scholarship/exhibitions at a national/international level.

Rank and Salary
This is a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. Salary is competitive and commensurate to experience and qualifications. Periodic salary adjustments are enacted by the state legislature. Moving expenses, start-up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
