Assistant Director of Digital Studio

About the Opportunity

JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Director of D.Studio will play a critical role in Information Technology Services, they will build and manage a team responsible for driving mature development practices that understand the creative process, lives for solving software architectural challenges, and loves bringing ideas to life through digital experiences.

The Assistant Director of D.Studio is responsible for overseeing a digital portfolio of tools that include Hubs, myNortheastern, Outsystems and NUGO. They also innovate on new product development and are responsible to deliver analysis, design, documentation, programming, and software to ensure product readiness for release and/or client use. They work closely with project managers, QA, Enterprise Applications, and Web/UX team members to ensure compliance with project needs.

The Assistant Director of D.Studio is an innovative, collaborative, and creative problem-solver who understands the value of technology as an enabler for organizational success. They are is an expert in current digital strategy trends and exhibits a strong track record of success in the digital space. This role requires a person who can communicate technology concepts clearly to a diverse set of constitutes including senior executives.

The ideal candidate will be experienced in a wide range of digital areas and will be a leader in understanding emerging digital technologies. They will acts as a champion and change agent in leading the organizational changes required to create and sustain enterprise digital capabilities. They must be adaptable and comfortable in an environment that thrives on innovation, flexibility and creativity and ensure that the university is developing the digital assets and capabilities that will be needed to survive and thrive in the midterm and long term.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • BS degree required in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business, Management, or related field.
  • Five or more years of work experience, preferably in business or IT management and ideally a combination of the two.
  • Three or more years of progressive leadership experience in leading cross-functional teams and enterprise wide programs, operating and influencing, effectively across the organization and within complex contexts
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work across business lines at senior levels to influence and effect change to achieve common goals.
  • Empathy for and identification with the leaders and employees in the organization affected by changes in the digital workplace.
  • Demonstrated leadership. A proven track record of successfully leading complex, multidisciplinary talent teams in new endeavors and delivering solutions.
  • Strategic technology planning experience. Experience in strategic technology planning and execution, as well as policy development and maintenance.
  • Analytical skills. Outstanding analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to effectively guide and sustain people, process and technology change in a dynamic and complex operating environment.
  • Seriousness or presence ("gravitas") to develop a digital workplace program, as well as to sell and embed it in all levels of the business.
  • Fearlessness in suggesting or backing big ideas. Tenacity in focusing the information discovery process.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. These skills will be used to explain digital concepts and technologies to business leaders, and business concepts to technologists; and to sell ideas and processes internally at all levels, including the board and investors.
  • Minimum three years of experience working with SCRUM or Agile development environment
  • Experience translating product requirements into design specifications
  • Experience with integrating with other systems through web services


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES

Digital Portfolio Oversight 60%
  • Assumes responsibility for planning, design, implementation and testing for assigned system components of a moderate degree of complexity
  • Challenges the norm by bringing a combination of experience and creativity to the design and implementation of Enterprise-scale software systems
  • Writes product specifications and design documentation for assigned system components. Organizes review and/or release of documentation when required
  • Balances equally the challenges that weigh on the business and the user, recognizing and communicating how each impacts the software architecture and implementation
  • Initiates communication with members of other departments and other members of development to ensure effective implementation
  • Meets with project leadership, and other stakeholders to present and build support and agreement around their technical points-of-view
  • Assists in the strategy through estimation exercises, staffing requests, and/or presentations
  • Strong debugging and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative, team based environment
  • Effectively prioritize workload to meet deadlines and work objectives. Uses resources effectively and efficiently. Is reliable in work habits. Able to organize and self-direct execution of tasks/duties


Applications Development 20%
  • Develop and implement relevant measurement tools and dashboards across the digital enterprise.
  • Develop strong analytical capabilities that translate into useful business insights


Staff Management 20%
  • Manages and provides ongoing coaching and mentoring to D.Studio staff.
  • Acts as the organizational change agent for improving D.Studio's maturity and practices, in support of ITS and University goals and strategy
  • Sets and accomplishes challenging goals


Develops plans that meet the architecture/technology needs of the organization, incorporating business priorities, strategies, goals, emerging technologies, industry trends and economic viability.
