Position Description
Ideal Candidate Statement:

Position:
Under the general supervision of the Health Sciences and Environmental Studies Dean, the Medical-Surgical Nursing Instructor will be responsible for teaching medical-surgical nursing courses to include theory, skills laboratory and clinical. The instructor may be expected to work in a classroom incorporating computer activities, as well as one with a traditional instructional format. Participation in departmental and campus-wide activities, and involvement on committees will be required as part of this position as a full-time faculty member. The instructor may be required to have his/her teaching assignment in the evening and/or weekend depending upon availability of appropriate hospital and community based clinical sites.



Desirable Qualifications:
1. Teaching experience in registered nursing at the post-secondary level.
2. Evidence of a willingness to develop new knowledge and clinical skills as required by a dynamic curriculum, which is highly responsive to a rapidly changing and demanding health care job market.
3. Experience teaching online and/or hybrid courses.
4. Experience in using innovative teaching methods that encourage student engagement and learning.
5. Experience in the use of computer technology as a teaching tool, including experience with course management systems (i.e. blackboard, canvas, etc.).
6. Experience in working with culturally diverse student populations (teaching or other situations in a leadership role).
7. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Be able to communicate effectively with students and colleagues. Ability to present material in a clear and effective manner.
8. Ability to work successfully in a team environment.
9. Demonstration of a pattern of participation in registered nursing professional growth activities.
10. National Certification in Medical-Surgical Nursing or other nursing specialty.
11. Perform duties described in Board policy, the Faculty Handbook, the UFO (faculty bargaining unit) Contract, and as assigned at the Fremont and Newark campuses, and/or other designated locations.
12. Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues (within discipline and college-wide) on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would enhance the development of the department and college.
13. Carry out collegial responsibilities including, but not limited to, institutional committee assignments, student recruitment and retention, full and part-time faculty recruitment and hiring, and participation in shared governance committees and campus life activities.
14. Continue professional development and remain current in the field through course work, conferences, workshops and other appropriate means.
15. Participate in the development and revision of curriculum and the program review processes, as well as assess student learning outcomes at the course and program levels.
16. Evaluate student work using clear criteria relevant to the course content and student learning outcomes and provide feedback to students in a timely manner.
17. Assist students with their assignments by holding required office hours, including hours in the Mathematics Learning Center, and attend department/division meetings.
18. Develop and implement a variety of effective teaching and assessment methods, including the use of computer-assisted or smart classrooms and information technology to engage student interest and support for a variety of learning styles.
19. Participate in the leadership of discipline specific learning communities.
20. Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, attendance reports).
21. Develop effective online course materials, and build online learning communities that meet accessible online course requirements and Title 5 55211 Effective Contact Policy requirements.
22. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Masters degree in registered nursing from an accredited college/university, which includes course work in field of study, with preparation for teaching clinical nursing as related to this job description. Equivalencies considered as approved by the Board of Registered Nursing*

Completion of a least one year experience teaching courses related to nursing OR a course which includes Practice in Teaching Nursing. (Submit official course description to verify course content or documented equivalent experience.)

Minimum or equivalent of one-year continuous, full-time registered nurse experience within the past three years in the practice of direct patient care in medical-surgical nursing.

A current, valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of California, or eligibility for license, and BRN faculty approval.

Commitment to community college goals/objectives of providing quality programs and services for culturally, socio-economically, ethnically, and academically diverse students and students with disabilities; personal qualities to work effectively and with sensitivity in a multicultural environment; awareness of and commitment to the needs of non-traditional and/or re-entry students with diverse abilities and interests.

Sabbatical Leave: After 6 consecutive years of employment with the district you will be eligible for sabbatical leave. You will receive 100% pay for one semester leave and 70% for an academic year.

Enrollment Fee Waiver: Employees and their qualified dependents receive enrollment fee waiver for courses taken at Ohlone College.

Certificated employees belong to the United Faculty of Ohlone (UFO) and are required to pay union dues
