The Department of Theater and Performance Studies at Stanford University (TAPS) invites applicants for a non-tenure track full-time Lecturer position in Lighting Design in 2023-24. The position will be for 1 year initially with the possibility of continuing.


The Lecturer in Lighting Design will be responsible for teaching 3 courses and designing for 3 main stage shows. Additional duties will include supervising student assistants and serving as an advisor for the design process for student productions.


All candidates must be not only committed to teaching, but also invested in expanding the field of theater. They are expected to provide evidence of teaching excellence, strong collaboration skills, collegiality, and the ability to work as a hands-on member of academic and production teams.


Applicants with a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, as well as an ability to expand students' cultural frameworks in an undergraduate academic environment are especially welcome.


Candidates must have:



  • Bachelor's degree and

  • MFA or equivalent professional experience beyond the bachelor's degree

  • Professional design experience and college-level teaching experience in one or more of the following areas: lighting, video/projection design, and scenography

  • A passion for growing the design program and helping students to start their professional careers in design

  • Experience in designing educational productions, working with student and faculty directed projects. Being able to teach the practical aspects of your lighting design is a must. Proficiency in software relevant to their design area may include one or more of the following: Vectorworks, Lightwright, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Qlab.

Stanford TAPS has an undergraduate Theater and Performance Studies B.A. program with concentrations available in Acting and Theater-Making; an undergraduate Minor program with concentrations in Theater and Performance Studies and Dance; and Ph.D. and Ph.D. Minor programs in Theater and Performance Studies.
