ABOUT THE POSITION
The Long Beach Community College District is looking to hire one (1) full-time tenure track Theater Arts Instructor commencing with the 2020 fall semester. The primary teaching assignment involves instructing a variety of technical and design theatre courses and designing lights and sets for the Theatre Program's fall and spring semester play productions. The teaching assignment may be at our beautiful Liberal Arts campus, state of the art Pacific Coast campus or other college teaching locations.     Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    All candidates must demonstrate
    Evidence of a sensitivity, understanding, and ability to manage the classroom environment AND effectively provide instruction to community college students of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

    Candidates must also meet one of the following qualifications under 1 - 4.
    1. A Master's or Master of Fine Arts degree in drama/theater arts/ performance.
    2. A Bachelor's or Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in drama/theater arts/performance AND a Master's degree in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature or humanities.
    3. Possess a valid California Community College instructor credential, specific to the discipline, per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990).
    4. Possess a combination of education and professional experience that is equivalent to the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit a Supplemental Equivalency Application (Download PDF reader) in addition to all other required materials.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Evidence of an ability to address and adapt to the instructional needs of varying student levels, using a variety of innovative, culturally relevant and responsive teaching strategies to encourage retention and student success in a wide range of theater courses.
  • Recent community college or lower division teaching experience.
  • Expertise in field of course(s) to be taught.
  • Master of Fine Arts Degree in Theater Arts with an emphasis in set and/or lighting design.
  • Commitment to work with students in activities outside of the classroom is essential.
  • Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Long Beach City College.
  • Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.
  • Commitment to the Mission and Strategic Objectives of the college.
  • Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with computers, and other technologies in order to provide high-quality classroom and lab instruction, including set and lighting design computer programs.
  • Willingness to develop new curricula and innovative materials for instruction.
  • Proficiency in building scale models, drawing set renderings, ground plans, set construction, lighting plots and lighting design techniques.
  • Creativity, flexibility, imagination and dedication are necessary to effectively perform the duties of this position.
