Whitman College Department of Theater and Dance seeks a Full Time Visiting Assistant Professor of Theater and Dance, and Costume Shop Director, effective August 2021. An MFA in Costume Design or Technology is required, with successful teaching experience at the post-secondary level.


The standard annual teaching load for this position is two courses (Costume Design and Costume Construction), costume design for two productions, plus the responsibilities held by the Costume Shop Director. A successful candidate will also have significant experience with costume construction (cutting, draping, flat patterning), period silhouettes, fabric modification and wardrobe maintenance. Make-up and hair design experience is useful. The Costume Shop Director works closely with both professional guest designers and student designers coordinating and executing our six season productions, including a combination of fully realized guest and faculty directed work, dance performances, and student directed work with varying degrees of shop support. An understanding of the varying timelines for dance production and devised work is valuable. The Costume Shop Director manages their own materials and labor budget, hires and trains a student work crew, maintains the costume shop, stock areas and dressing rooms, and actively participates in holistic production planning. Excellent communication and organizational skills, as well as the ability to foster an inclusive, positive working environment focused on education, are a must.
