About the Department:

Development and External Affairs (DEA) supports SMU by securing funding for University priorities; by promoting meaningful involvement in the life and work of the University; by heightening international, national, state and local awareness of SMU; and by supporting the enrollment of a diverse and able student body.

DEA comprises the offices of Office of the Vice President, Annual Giving and Alumni Relations, Development Services, Program Services and Donor Relations, Marketing and Communications, Principal and Major Gifts, and School and Project Development.

SMU continues to leverage the benefits from the largest fund-raising campaign in its history to achieve dramatic increases in academic quality and impact.

About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

The Content Marketing Manager will contribute to a university-wide content strategy that increases recognition for SMU teaching, research and graduate education among higher education leaders; raises visibility of SMU's impact to inspire more supporters and advocates; and attracts more outstanding undergraduate and graduate students.

Essential Functions:

  • Collaborates with the SEO, Web Dev, and Analytics teams to develop an university-wide content strategy based on SEO studies, UX studies, web analysis to engage a diversity range of audiences, including prospective students, parents, alumni, academic community, and other stakeholders.


  • Under the Executive Director's directions, the Content Marketing Manager will contribute for SMU's content strategy that lead a variety of web and social content, such as research websites, program pages, event pages, blogs, news, and social media posts to deliver on web traffic, brand awareness, and lead generation goals.


  • Build strong relationships with marketing leadership and content owners at SMU's eight schools, units, as well as alumni and development & external affair departments to source a variety of content that are essential for the execution of university-level content strategy.


  • Continuously audit and monitor content performance on SMU.edu website with the SEO team. Re-purpose and restructure content for better traffic, engagement, lead generation outcomes.


  • Partner with the Creative Marketing team to manage a centralized content calendar for the university. Coordinate with content creators across schools and departments to ensure content strategy consistency. Provide content strategy support and best practice guidance to schools and departments.


  • Collaborate with the Creative Marketing team on hiring and training freelancers and/or student workers for content creation under specific project needs.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree is required, preferably in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or English

A minimum of three years of content management experience is required.

Experience in higher education or a non-profit organization preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills. Strong project management skills and a strong focus on attention to detail is essential.

Candidate must have a strong working knowledge of MS Office. Must also have knowledge of and experience with online content strategy and creation.
