About the Department:

The Deason Criminal Justice Reform Center at SMU Dedman School of Law is a nationally recognized research and advocacy center that combines data-driven research and compelling stories to advocate for sensible criminal justice reform. With a unique focus on the Sixth Amendment Right to Counsel and a continuing emphasis on criminal legal systems in small, tribal, and rural (STAR) communities, the Deason Center sets SMU apart as an innovative and impactful hub of criminal legal research and policy advocacy.

About the Position:

We are looking for an experienced marketing professional who will assist in the development and execution of a digital marketing strategy that promotes the Deason Center's work in transforming the criminal legal system. This position will be responsible for the daily management of social media, website content, event planning and marketing, community engagement, and other marketing initiatives.

Essential Functions:

  • Create multiplatform marketing materials for Deason Center research projects, translate reports and policy briefs for various platforms and develop original digital content that aligns with platform-specific strategies.

  • Plan in-person and virtual events that will engage stakeholders and advance the Deason Center's research and policy agenda. Promote events online and on social media to increase public participation and raise awareness. Manage all pre-event planning and logistics, ensure the completion of event-related tasks, and take responsibility for successful execution from start to finish.

  • Maintain and improve content for the Deason Center's website to ensure that all content is current and in accordance with the Center's digital marketing strategy

  • Maintain and improve the organization's email marketing strategy, and craft engaging external emails and newsletters.

  • Manage day-to-day activity on existing social media platforms and leverage growth opportunities on emerging platforms. Craft engaging social media content with sharp copy and compelling graphics, and post the content regularly. Identify emerging trends and issues on social media and online and capitalize on opportunities to make Deason Center research part of the conversation online.

  • Maintain a digital media content schedule that grows audience and drives increased engagement


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree is required. Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or Journalism is preferred.

A minimum of two (2) years of experience is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate professional experience in digital content management, social media marketing, and planning and marketing events, workshops, and webinars. Strong visual design skills, basic web development and coding are required. Candidate with functional knowledge of trends, measurement, and marketing and public relations best practices is required.

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills. Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.

Required software skills:
  • Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere)
  • Commonly used graphic design tools (such as Canva)
  • Email marketing tools (preferably Mailchimp)
  • Social media management tools (such as Hootsuite or Buffer)
